Recent propositions passed by California voters – Prop 36 or the “Three Strikes Reform Act” and Prop 47 or “the Safe Neighborhoods and Schools Act” – reduce the sentence for certain crimes. Inmates in prison who are serving sentences of 25 years to life may be eligible for a sentencing reduction if the offense for which their sentence was imposed is not a serious or violent felony. People convicted of drug possession and certain nonviolent property crimes may have the right to have their convictions re-classified from a felony to misdemeanor.
